The game might not have mattered, but we finally had some live NHL-affiliated hockey on Saturday when the Detroit Red Wings prospects and the Dallas Stars prospects played.
The Red Wings won 4-3, but more importantly we started to get some baseline readings on prospects for both organizations before training camp.
1. It’s important to keep that intro thought in mind for this 20/20.
I treated this game more as a scouting venture than game coverage, and will do the same for the remainder of the prospect tournament, which goes through Tuesday.
2. Off the ice, it was the first live Red Wings event we’ve had since Steve Yzerman was relieved/quit his duties as general manager.
The Red Wings also still don’t have a GM and Shawn Horcoff is filling in on an interim basis, so there’s a really weird vibe of uncertainty around the organization.
3. One NHL scout in attendance, for a team not at this tournament, jokingly asked if he could get the job before walking into the scout lounge.
