20/20: Red Wings top Stars in game that had preseason in April vibes
It was the NHL version of the Shap Shots bowl, so we've got a fun 20/20 for you.
It was a preseason game in mid April.
The Dallas Stars are locked into a first-round playoff matchup with the Colorado Avalanche. The Detroit Red Wings will miss the playoffs for the ninth straight season and were playing their home finale.
The Stars rested their top two healthy defenders for the second straight game.
Before the game Stars head coach Pete DeBoer and Red Wings coach Todd McClellan joked and chatted in the hallway between locker rooms, same went for Stars assistant Steve Spott and Red Wings assistant Jay Varady.
The competitive juices, you could say, weren’t really that competitive.
And in the end the Red Wings won 6-4, largely in part to an impressive third period by Lucas Raymond.
With all that being said, and because I’d like to dial into playoff-type coverage myself, we’ve got a 20/20 from the NHL version of the Shap Shots bowl.
1. While the game held little meaning in the standings, it had some near-historical relevance for the 2007 NHL Draft class.
Patrick Kane, the No. 1 pick and highest scoring player from that draft, played his 1,300th game on Monday, becoming the eighth American player to reach that mark.
He also registered his 850th career assist, which is second-most all-time amongst Americans behind Phil Housley.
Jamie Benn, the 129th player drafted in 2007 and second leading scorer from the draft, seemed to have scored his 400th career goal in the first period.
