One of the great “What Ifs?” in Dallas Stars history relates back to the 2016 NHL playoffs.

Tyler Seguin had his achilles sliced in the regular season, he only played one playoff game. While the Stars Game 7 loss to the St. Louis Blues that season is greatly blamed on goaltending, there’s an alternate history where a healthy Seguin makes a difference in that series.

Seguin knows that, he knows that 2016 was a missed chance at the Stanley Cup. It’s why he pushed so hard to play through so many ailments in the bubble in 2020 and it ultimately cost him nearly all of the 2020-21 season.

So when Joe Pavelski was knocked out in Game 1 against the Minnesota Wild, Seguin seized an opportunity to make sure Pavelski’s loss wouldn’t be the injury that stopped Dallas from advancing in 2023.
