It's a big week for Alex DeBrincat
The Red Wings forward plays his 500th game tomorrow and that's just the start of it.
Alex DeBrincat is going to play his 500th career NHL game on Wednesday when the Detroit Red Wings host the Ottawa Senators.
Before his 501st game, DeBrincat will have partaken in his second NHL All-Star Game and likely celebrated the birth of his second child with his wife Lyndsey.
Needless to say, it’s a busy week for the DeBrincat family.
DeBrincat will drive to Toronto on Thursday morning, his parents and 1-year-old son, Archie, are coming along for the trip, while Lyndsey will stay home with the baby due three days after the game.
“So, yeah it really is like any moment now,” DeBrincat said.
And if it happens any moment, family is going to come first. So if DeBrincat suddenly disappears from All-Star weekend, perhaps even mid game on Saturday, it could be because he got the call about a baby on the way.
“It is what it is, and if that’s what we gotta do, we will deal with it,” DeBrincat said.
It would be the second time the Red Wings had a player leave an NHL major event for the birth of a child. Earlier this season when the Red Wings flew to Sweden for the NHL Global Series, Ville Husso quickly boarded a flight back to the United States for the birth of his first daughter, Emmi.
In the short-term, DeBrincat is planning on doing his best to enjoy All-Star weekend with his parents and Archie.
“We’re just gonna enjoy the weekend, it’s obviously not everyday and every season that you get to experience something like that,” DeBrincat said. “So we’re gonna soak it all in the best we can and, and you know, just have some fun.”
Outside the All-Star Game, DeBrincat is currently second on the team with 43 points and 18 goals through 49 games. He's on pace to reach the 30-goal mark for the fourth time in his career.
“I’d like to be a little more consistent, but I’ve been playing relatively steady,” DeBrincat said. “Getting my chances and I think away from the puck, trying to play good in the D zone. That’s where I feel I’ve really improved on from last year.”
