I absolutely love this article! Growing up in St. Louis, I could not count on pond skating. But those few opportunities were magical. You captured the magic!
On a reservoir fighting the wind one direction, being pushed like a kite the other, shooting and missing the old wooden nets some dad made (only to sink to the bottom in the spring) and having to chase the puck a mile… or on a backyard pond playing under an old street lamp a dad hooked up, losing all your pucks into the unfrozen reeds, trying to fish one out with your stick without falling in, dddd-damn cold :))). Walking home with your gear on your stick over your shoulder, icicles from your nose!
Love the narrative visual, Sean. Never lived up north, but was here in Dallas for the ‘77-‘78 and ‘21 deep freezes and saw people make some backyard rinks then.
