The Dallas Stars opened the season at home on Thursday with a 2-1 shootout win against the St. Louis Blues.

The following are my quick thoughts at the final buzzer.

1. Overtime, again

The Stars lost 14 games in overtime last season.

It was essentially the difference between Dallas winning and finishing second in the Central Division, and it became almost comical how bad the Stars were in the 3-on-3 showcase.

So of course the Stars went to overtime on opening night.

They nearly lost in on the very first shift, Jake Oettinger bailed them out.

Oettinger then had two of the best plays of overtime pushing the play forward and trapping St. Louis’ tired players on the ice.

Miro Heiskanen and Jason Robertson nearly won it with 42.2 second remaining in overtime, but Jordan Binnington came across to make the glove save.
