This whole "jock tax" thing is a scam. I travel for work to multiple states and just because I'm "working " there doesn't mean I have to file taxes there. I guess I'm thankful for that, but this whole thing is just government overreach in my view

'Toronto Maple Leaf fans might be the biggest suckers in this hard salary cap system. The value of the franchise, the loyalty of the fanbase, the revenues generated, and the Leafs can’t pay players at market value like the Yankees. The Leafs are trapped in the hard cap. Or the fans and players at least, it’s doubtful Rogers and the rest of the owners mind paying the hockey players less. 300 million or more for Vladimir, bread crumbs for Marner. Wake up Leaf fans. But that’s true for all the Canadian teams these days. We have the market, give us our players back.'https://trkingston.substack.com/p/a-canadian-nhl-commissioner-would

As someone originally from California, I can believe they try harder to collect taxes not actually due them than other states. They want to tax income earned in other states for people who move out of California. My dad was a CPA, so tax talk is like comfort food for me.

There are ALWAYS work arounds with taxes. Shelter are available for those making millions. Fourth liners and depth players are impacted more in a short career. We have no income taxes in Texas, but we get killed with higher property and sales tax. One can argue some owners pay more because they have more. What the NHL does have is a hard cap and that is a better leveling agent especially with pretty much guaranteed contracts.
