Some redditor had what I thought was a great idea. Every game starts out with a shoot out, followed by the regular game, and if the regular game it tied, then 3v3 overtime for 5 mins. If after 3v3, the game is still tied, whoever won the shoot out at the beginning wins the game. The team that lost the shoot out would have nothing to loose in 3v3 and everything to gain, and it would result in super aggressive offensive play and pulling goalies. If the game doesn't end in a tie the shootout was (almost) meaningless. That would also give you a large enough sample size of shoot out metrics to know that Zegras is going to every all Star game to participate in the break away competition. And more importantly, I hate all sporting events that end in a tie, so it prevents that.
The only problem might be that the fastest skaters are likely mostly the same guys every year, same with the guys with the hardest shot, and same with the highest percentage scorers in shoot outs. But I guess we mostly see the same guys every year in the current format.
Excellent article, like all of your work. Wish you would come back to Dallas as the Stars writer for DMN. To say their coverage is pathetic is an understatement
1. I refuse to pay for NHL Network/cable so I hate games like this.
2. Who do we trade/buyout to afford someone new?
3. The skills competition makes far more sense if it's actually a skills competition, not just testing the guys who happen to be there.
