This may not be the most useful feedback but I like what you’ve done with having a focus on a team or 2 but being open to outside stories. As much as I’d like to see you grow into a league wide source I will selfishly hope to keep you focused on the Stars. We are losing coverage and what’s left is either truly small time independent (like DBD stretching into D mag.) or the Athletic where Saad tries and I’ve preached giving him time to grow but man it’s stark that you left for a few years yet you come back with more depth, more assertiveness, more contacts and resources (at least seemingly), immediately becoming the closest thing this town has to an honest insider while being over 1000 miles away. I really don’t want to knock any outlet but it’s been obvious who can still pull a real story out of Nill or others in the Org.
TL;Dr keep it up, you’ve had my money since 100 degree and still get it.
You are my favorite stars (or any sport) sportswriter, and it only makes sense to pay a few bucks to get to enjoy your coverage. I honestly want to subscribe, and I probably will very soon. The one thing that has kept me from doing so is I feel like this current website is not that user friendly. It may be that I'm just not the best with technology, but your previous websites seemed much better set up. Is there a podcast? If so, how do I access it? I have the app downloaded and haven't been able to find it. One of my favorite things is listening to your podcast as I drive to and from work.
hey Kyle, appreciate the feedback... I've played around with the podcast space on here and will do so more in the future, so stay tuned on that... on the user friendly part, any specifics I can have? I'm still learning everything about the substack platform so I can see if there is a way I can make it work.
Sorry for the late response, but I can never find your podcasts when they are posted. I went on the Substack app and they only have like 5 from earlier in the year. Nothing around playoff time. Is there a different app they are posted on?
Awesome. Thank you! I found it after the message, just didn't realize it was with 105.3. Another question in case you see this- Do you think Jim Nill would do an interview with you during the playoffs? Would be so interesting to read you picking his brain while the playoffs are going on. Love the good work you have been putting out stars related.
I enjoy all your stories. Your hockey business stories are different from a lot of what I see elsewhere. Your features are fantastic. I’m glad I have the chance to subscribe to your work. I’ve read your reporting since your days as a Stars beat reporter, but I read you for more than Stars coverage.
I follow the league and look around for fun teams or games all the time so I will repeat that trope follow your heart. Write about whatever you want to write about. I do think consistency is important to keep readers coming back for same things. I think bc you covered the business with the networks before folks like me might check here for follow ups on it. I still think system vs system matchups are very interesting although I guess it must bore other folks bc nobody talks about it.
If people can understand football plays, they can understand systems. I don't understand why it's such a mystery. There's few broadcasts that discuss it. Jay Caufield for PIT talks about it sometimes during intermission. LAK broadcast brought it up vs WSH bc it's always a clogged nz slog those games bc they both play 1-3-1. It's also so interesting when a team comes out of an intermission and changes it. I don't notice that much bc I can barely watch now but... anyways. Something to think about.
As someone who hasn't lived in DFW in almost two decades (man that feels weird), I wouldn't mind if you covered hockey in a more generalized sense beyond the Stars. There are plenty of stories and such outside the NHL-proper that ultimately impact everyone. So I would love to see that (and I think it will be difficult to just cover the Wings and Stars).
I appreciate the feedback, one of the things that I'm trying to figure out the balance on is that general space, and doing more league-wide stuff here.... it's good to know at least one person would be interested

thanks for the kind words Josh. Really means a lot to hear things like that.
Love your feature stories, would like more on the business of hockey as well as media stories.
Texas Stars- how do they travel to the faraway AHL cities and what kind of hotels do they stay in versus the Stars
an AHL travel log/deep look would be a good one. Let me put that in idea notebook.

Hey Kyle, I have two podcasts that I work with hosted outside of substack. Spits & Suds is dallas based, here is the link to that one https://www.audacy.com/podcasts/spits-suds-31463
I also recently started doing a league wide one "Expected by Whom" which is available here https://twitter.com/expectedbywhom
