I have pretty strong memories from the 2019 NHL Draft.

It was held in Vancouver, one of the best spots on the NHL circuit, and I spent the first two rounds of that draft sitting with the Robertson family for a draft day feature on Nicholas Robertson, chronicling the family experiences for a prospect that was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

It was also the draft where Thomas Harley was chosen as “Harley Thomas” and in the seventh round, the Calgary Flames took Dustin Wolf with the 214th overall pick.

I have to give credit to my former colleague and occasional road drinking buddy, Scott Wheeler, because I remember talking to him in Vancouver that weekend and him raving about the Flames pick, about how they’d made a smart bet on a goalie that might actually amount to something.

Five years later, the seventh-round “gamble” seems to have paid off for the Flames, who signed Wolf to a seven-year contract extension, with an annual cap hit of $7.5 million.

Wolf has only played 71 career NHL games, but he’s been dynamic in those showings. This past season he took over the starter’s workload in Calgary, starting 53 games and delivering a 29-16-8 record and .910 save percentage. In those 53 games he also had 30 quality starts, 13th most in the league.
