The outsiders are starting to run to NHL teams and that's a great thing
Some quick thoughts on the new hire for the Carolina Hurricanes.
The Carolina Hurricanes hired Tyler Dellow as their new assistant general manager on Friday.
It’s one of the first big hires for new Hurricanes general manager Eric Tulsky, who took over after Don Waddell left for the Columbus Blue Jackets this summer.
Dellow used to be with the New Jersey Devils, spending five seasons with the organization, most recently as senior vice president of hockey strategy and analytics.
My co-host Prashanth Iyer and I had tried to get Dellow on our podcast “Expected by Whom?” in the past, but the request was squashed by the Devils front office — something that has happened with a couple other NHL teams when it comes to requests.
It was always a bummer because Dellow, like Tulsky, worked his way into the hockey operations space from the outside. He was a lawyer by trade and in his free time ran one of the top hockey analytics sites before being scooped up by NHL teams.
It’s a pretty cool thing to see, the Hurricanes are run by two outsiders, the Washington Capitals recently brought CapFriendly to hire the braintrust behind it, and NHL teams are taking notice of outside work.
Someday, someone is going to hire Prashanth away, I’m pretty confident of that, which means I’ll have to figure out how to run “Expected by Whom?” by myself.
In the meantime, let’s take time on Friday to visit the interview that Prashanth and I had last month with Tulsky.
Thanks for reading this week, looking forward to chatting again on Monday.
I sure hope it is the Wings who are smart enough to snatch Prashanth up!
