Tyler Seguin is out for 4-6 months and now the Stars could be big buyers
Some quick thoughts on the big news of the day in Dallas.
Tyler Seguin is likely done for the remainder of the regular season after the team announced on Wednesday that he’d have surgery on Thursday to repair a left side FAI (femoral acetabular impingement) and the left side hip labrum.
According to the Stars release Seguin is expected to miss four to six months and the surgery will be performed by Dr. Bryan T. Kelly at Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, N.Y.
I’ve written on this site before that we knew Seguin was dealing with something, and that when it was made public it would make the start to Seguin’s season look even more impressive.
And from what’s been said publicly and from what I’ve heard behind-the-scenes, recovery has been hellacious for Seguin after games. It’s why he hasn’t been able to play back-to-backs, and why with the condensed nature of the Stars schedule a procedure won out compared to managing the pain until the end of the season.
The timing is also key here, with having the surgery tomorrow, Seguin’s recovery puts him on track to be available early in the postseason if everything goes according to plan.
It also gives the Stars a ton of room to play with if they decide to use Long-Term Injured Reserve for Seguin’s $9.85 million cap hit. Remember, with LTIR you only use when you need it, but this could be the ideal time for Dallas to use that space for a big swing to either improve the defense or add another forward — maybe even both.
