Maybe there are some personal reasons, whatever they might be. There are also less games in SHL than in AHL. More time for development, training, recovery etc.
Also WJC 2024 will be played in the same neck of the woods he's returning to. Maybe he's just looking for the best development path for himself?

Yes he could. He in theory could be called back to nhl at any time
